Village Life
I was inspired to write this post after visiting ‘Photo’s by Jan‘, Jan will tell you that “Photography is my therapy” and her blog is full of wonderfully expressive images which she calls “Photos of random items”. I do enjoy the journey that her images take me on and her latest post “Today’s Walk into Town” was no exception. Jan became my muse after seeing her post and made me want to share my own walk.
But first a little bit of history:
My work generally takes me to cities or industrial areas and after living right in the middle of a busy town I made the decision that when I come home I want to be somewhere where the pace isn’t so fast, I also wanted a place of ‘community’ for my son to grow up. I have lived in Earls Barton for 5 years and it truly is a place that I feel at home with. It’s still classed as a village but it has grown incredibly in size over the years. It’s mostly known for it’s traditional heritage links to shoe-making and for its famous Saxon church, the tower of which dates back to 970 AD. Earls Barton was also the inspiration for the film ‘Kinky Boots’ and as you would expect, part of the film was actually shot here. If you don’t know the film it is based on a true story of a local boot maker who desperate to save his ailing family business and his workers turns from making traditional boots to producing fetish footwear. It’s a great film if you haven’t seen it, I’ve left the trailer just in case you haven’t.
Anyway back to my walk, the rest is in pictures so I’ll try to keep the narrative to a minimum:
Starting out not quite from my street but from the main road that leads from my street, the church at the moment is at the top of the road, directly behind us and at the bottom of this road are the fields and the canal where everyone goes to walk their dogs.
So lets turn round and walk up to the church.
If you look to your left you will see that some of the driveways round here are so pretty.
Anyway lets continue up the road…
We are halfway up the hill and just over the dip the church will be coming into view.
I just love the way the houses look here, there’s a real mix of old and new.
I miss the smell of baked goods that come from here when I work away
Getting hungry then head into Espresso for a coffee and a cake.
Maybe get your nails done beauticians, pick up some old fashioned sweets and maybe for dinner,
you can nip into the thatched roof cottage to pick up a tasty Indian specialty.
Across the road is the chemist, the museum, the butchers and a host of wonderful surprises.
Behind here is the church, its very peaceful today.
Then there’s the pub, fancy a beer?
Up the road and round the bend, can you see where it ends?
It’s like it goes on forever but just at the end of this road is one of the main roads into the village.
Directly to my right from here is the church,
I find most of our churches to be pretty boring in their appearances compared to the grand churches of Europe but this one is quite special.
I hope you enjoyed the walk with me today.
If you feel like sharing one of your walks in pictures come back and leave me your link so I can walk with you.

Oooo… I truly enjoy long walks whether it’s for meditation purposes, for leisure or for brisk exercises
You know I realized how virtual adventures could really take one’s mind totally into it…it’s how I feel every time I look into images. I took a walk with Jan last night and this morning, I’m transported to another wonderful place
Awesome should I say!
And wearing kinky boots could spell out a lot of fun too
Quaint, peaceful, inviting . . . loved all these photos, S.J. I wish I could walk there with you. Thanks for sharing the beauty of your village.
Blessings!
Hello SJ.
I enjoyed my walk with you. We should do it more often (smile).
My wife is from the UK, so I’m always interested in seeing different parts of her world.
Nice photos.
We’ve watched the movie “Kinky Boots” a couple of times now & it’s very enjoyable.
Thanks for sharing.
Such an refreshing walk. So peaceful and quiet. Took us back in time when life was much simpler.
Now I know where you get your lovely boots from, SJ!
Earls Barton looks like such a perfect place for a family – it’s the kind of place I’d like to grow old in. Thank you for taking us on the walk – I loved it!
Meant to also say that I thoroughly enjoyed Kinky Boots…I’m going to watch it again now to look at your village!

Thanks for sharing!!
I absolutely love the ideas of taking a walk with pictures and what a charming one this is. I love the way you capture the feeling of the village. Wonderful!
SJ, I felt like I was in a dream. Wow! Such beautiful landscape and scenery. The architecture is phenomenal and you captured everything so well
Thank you for taking us on this little walk with you.
I haven’t even seen this movie advertised over here. About spit out my coffee when that older woman talked about the toilet seat! LOL
That was soooo fun! It would be funner to do the actual walk with you, but I really really enjoyed that!!!
I’m trying to take things OFF my to do list, but I may need to jump on this bandwagon. At least I’d get some exercise too!
What I find so fascinating about this is that this village has retained its character and personality for so long. I love all the little mom & pop businesses and the fact that I didn’t once see a huge “big box” retailer of any kind. We have little towns like this in the U.S., but they’re few and far between, dying out as young people gravitate towards bigger cities for jobs. It makes me smile that such a place still exists and that time slows down a wee for its inhabitants.
I loved my visit with you today, and will return!
